The launching session of the ''National Sustainable Development Strategy of Romania 2013-2020-2030'' (NSDS) took place on 22 January 2008 in the Aula Magna of the Romanian Academy. The document was prepared according to the requirements of the European Union by the Government of Romania through the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme through the National Centre for Sustainable Development.
The session was opened by Acad. Ionel Haiduc, President of the Romanian Academy, who also moderated the debate.
The officials who participated in the event and delivered speeches included Traian Basescu, President of Romania; Attila Korodi, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development; Thore Hansen, Deputy Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme in Romania; and Acad. Mugur Isarescu, Governor of the National Bank of Romania.
The official launch of the project was followed by a working session of the National Council for Public Debate, the main public forum of the Strategy. The session discussed the working stages of the project omplementation, the structures involved in the elaboration process, the conceptual framework and the draft contents of the Strategy.
The successive versions of the draft Strategy were prepared by an interdisciplinary Drafting Group and examined each time by a Scientific Council designated by the Romanian Academy in accordance with the approved action plan, the EU recommendations and the UNDP practice.
During the months of March and May 2008, the draft Strategy was discussed at public meetings that were held in the eight development region of Romania (twice in each region). The final version of the National Sustainable Development Strategy was adopted by the Government of Romania on 12 November 2008 and published in the Official Gazette on 8 December 2008.
After the completion of internal procedures, the Strategy was presented to the European Commission in December 2008.
The document contains strategic objectives and intermediary targets for the short, medium and long terms, specific implementation measures, realistic financing sources and an evaluation and monitoring mechanism covering the periods to the years 2013, 2020 and 2030.
